Pool Maintenance - Get the Pool Summer-Ready

Pool Pump

The days of having ice cream, cold drinks and sunbath on the beach are back in Australia. After the pandemic, no one got a chance to vacation, so this is the best time to head out and soak in the sun. And now that the summers are back, it is the best time to prepare your pool for the season. Bring out your skills and get rid of the winter damage.

However, maintaining the pool is a major task, and it may consume your weekend, but it is worth the time. You will be sorted for the entire season. And all those summer swimming pool parties are back, so start your pool pump and let's get started!

  1. Remove those covers

Let us analyse what we are dealing with! Remove those covers and see what has happened until now - the amount of debris collected throughout the winters. Carefully remove the water from the pool covers so that it does not destroy the entire pool. All those leaves, debris and melted snow, if mixed with the water will just increase your work.
  2. Analyse the water level

Before you move any further, check if the water level is where it should be. And if not, don't hesitate to put a hosepipe and add some water till you reach the level of your pool. If you are confused, then the level should be where your skimmer is in the pool. So, now you know, and you have a guideline for the water level. Let's move ahead.
  3. Check the chemical balance of the water

When you remove the covers, that's the moment of truth. Did you do an excellent job in winters, or were you in a hurry and not doing the required steps? If you see the water is clear, you are safe, and you don't need to do anything. But in case the pH balance of water is not suitable for you, check the pH balance of the water, it may take a few days, but it will be worth the wait. You can get a testing kit from your local pool supply store to monitor the levels throughout the season. You can then alter your chemicals according to the test's recommendations to achieve the proper levels.
  4. Get started with the equipment

You should check pump lid o-rings, cartridge filter o-rings, sand filter o-rings and union o-rings. To maintain them, supple for the forthcoming season; give them a once-over and apply some silicone-based lubricants. If any o-rings are cracked or damaged, it's preferable to replace them before the swimming season begins. Keep an eye on the solar pool heater to see if it is working correctly or needs some maintenance. While your pool cleaners aren't in full service yet, spring is the optimum time to revamp them. Their wheels, pool hoses, motors and other moving parts should all be checked.
  5. Scrub the pool

This part should not be complicated; it becomes easier when you are going through the entire process. Scrub the pool walls, and the bottom part of the pool may have dirt stuck on the tile. Scrub to remove all that, along with fungus or algae that may have accumulated. The only thing that can go wrong is that the brush may get brittle, due to which it may make your job challenging and messy. The solution for this is to get a new brush before you start cleaning.
  6. Pool pump making noise

Check if your pool pump is making any kind of a sound. If yes, then you have to service your pump as well. You could shut it down and check the barrier. You could give it a try by replacing the barrier, and still if the sound continues, then you need to replace the pump with a mechanic, which would help you save some money.
